4 Things I’ve Learned Helping Specialty Contractors Go Digital

After years working with specialty contractors — first in steel fabrication, now at Procore — I’ve seen what separates the firms that thrive from the ones that struggle through digital transformation.

Here are four lessons that keep proving true:

1. Technology doesn’t fix broken processes — it exposes them.

If your change order workflow is chaos on paper, it’ll be chaos in software too. The best implementations start with honest conversations: What’s actually working? What are we doing just because we’ve always done it?

The tool is only as good as the process underneath it.

2. Field adoption makes or breaks everything.

You can have the best platform in the world, but if your crews won’t use it, you’re just paying for expensive shelfware. The secret? Involve field teams early. Show them how it makes their lives easier — not just the office’s.

When a foreman sees that logging an issue on their phone means faster responses and fewer headaches, adoption stops being a battle.

3. Data only matters if you act on it.

Dashboards are great. But a dashboard nobody looks at is just decoration. The contractors winning right now are the ones who build rhythms around their data — weekly reviews, monthly deep-dives, real-time alerts that trigger action.

Information without action is just noise.

4. This is a journey, not a flip-switch.

Digital maturity doesn’t happen overnight. The firms that succeed treat it as continuous improvement, not a one-time project. Start where you are. Build momentum. Celebrate small wins.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress.

I get to work with specialty contractors every day, helping them navigate this stuff. It’s one of my favorite parts of the job — because when it clicks, it really clicks.
